오프라 윈프리처럼 가난한 집에서 태어난 그녀는 어려서 부터 음악적 재질이 풍부해서 학교생활 중에는 보컬 그룹으로 활동 하였다. 고등학생때 레코드사에 픽업된 그녀는 트리오 Supreams로 활동하기도 했고 활동중에 빌보드 챠트에서 여러번 No.1 을 차지하기도 했다. 이 노래는 영화<마호가니>의 주제곡으로 이 곡 역시 빌보드 챠트 No.1 을 차지 했다.
